Comparing perceptions of nursing faculty and students to actual student performance in syringe measurement and use: An example of the Dunning-Kruger effect?

Introduction: A vital component of nursing education is the evaluation by faculty student nurse’s skill competence. Erroneous estimations competence, as in syringe measurements and dosages, can be critical to patient safety. The Dunning-Kruger effect describes overestimation/underestimation It professional responsibility students able assess actual versus perceived competence levels accurately. Purpose: purpose this study was compare perceptions measurement usage. Methods: cross-sectional, descriptive, comparative conducted a School Nursing Skills Laboratory. Participants included 3rd 4th year students. Results: sample 96 30 members. Significant differences were found between perception (p=0.001). successful performance all lower than expected; had higher their performance, performing at level Discussion: educators upper-class performance. This supports Dunning Kruger behooves more precise assessments. Conclusions: In today's milieu online teaching, keen awareness objectivity regarding clinical skills imperative for client longitudinal measuring compared with warranted.
